Even though for ages I thought it was Downtown Abbey, I am obsessed with this show. Finally a TV obsession that makes me forget Veronica Mars (well, it's been pretty forgotten these past few years). Matthew and Mary are my new ship. They MUST MUST MUST end up together!!

So I think--at least hope--that Hurricane Irene is a big bust.  I had to evacuate yesterday from my one-day vacation, due to the hurricane-- drove down to Bethany Beach Thursday only to drive back home Friday. A two hour drive took five hours... i was ready to pop my cork.  Luckily I remembered to rescue the rum and pina colada mix!

Delurking to post a note urging everyone to consider designating themselves as organ donors--you can indicate it on your license.  A good friend died today while waiting for a lung transplant.  He had been so sick for so long... he was at the top of the list in the Pennsylvania-NJ-Delaware region, yet no lung became available in time for him.

Delurking to ask if anyone know what is going on with LiveJournal.... it seems to be very unstable right now.  I read on another journal that the DdOS attacks that are knocking LiveJournal offline is actually being generated by the Russian government trying to get to some bloggers they don't like.  If that's the case, it's really outrageous... or am I just joining the ranks of the paranoid?

Meanwhile, life continues--trying to find a decent gym and working too hard.  More of the same...

I hope everyone had a great holiday!! We're expecting a snow storm here on the east coast, but I'm pretty lucky in that my work has a shutdown between Christmas and New Years.  I think I'll spend the next few days with my new best friends, my Mac and my Ipad.  Still learning how to get around the Mac--but what a great machine.

Hoping that everyone on my friends list has a fantastic holiday!  My big day (or night) will be New Years Eve, when I see Joel McHale at the Borgata.  I may just have to jump his bones.

On another note, just saw an ad for a commemorative 9/11 coin--with gold and silver mined from the "ashes of the site".  Can I tell you how squicked out I am? Really squicked... people died there--their ashes are there too.  I wonder how the families feel about people making money off of the ashes of their loved ones.  Yechhh.

Just watched the first episode of The Walking Dead... wow, that had to be some of the most compelling television I've seen in a long time.  It was incredibly gory, to be sure, but the story-telling and acting were stellar.  I started watching it before I went to bed the other night, but spooked myself silly, so finished it tonight.

The question now is whether I can actually bring myself to watch any more.  Did I mention it was incredibly gory?

Not 2008...

Wow, what a complete turnaround from 2008. Back then, the Phillies had won the World Series and we had just elected Obama.  I'm feeling decidedly down after the Phils self-destructed and the GOP prevailed during the election, but I have to keep bringing myself back from the cliff.  I know the Phils will be ok, but the country.,.. well, I'm worried, although I understand that the most extreme dissatisfied voters came out to vote, and that may not be the case two years from now.  I also will never stop believing that the anger of these extreme voters is partially rooted in having a black man as president.

I am very liberal, but I understand that people may not have the same views as me (although they're wrong :)).  But what gets me is how the far right totally clouds the real issues (unemployment, the disproportionate wealth distribution in our country, global warming, etc.) with issues that mean absolutely nothing to the quality of life of its citizens (gay marriage, etc.).  They use these moral issues to pull in the most extreme voters to vote for them, and then enact nice laws and tax breaks that keep the wealthiest empowered.

Prop 8...

Wow I can't believe it's been almost a year since my last post!  I'm mostly on facebook now, but I do love reading LJ blogs and journals... delurking to add my woohoo!  to the overturning of Prop 8!!

Holy shit, the Eagles have signed Michael Vick???  I just found out when a friend on another site predicted that Donovan McNabb would be replaced in the middle of the season by (sic) Vic who would take them to the Super Bow....I'm like, they signed some guy named Victor??

I don't know what to think about this.  I'm a huge animal lover, but I also believe if someone did their time, they should be able to earn a living at their craft and given a second chance... people have to be able to earn a living in order to begin to work on themselves to not do what got them in jail in the first place..

But jeez, he organized dog fights... dog fights!  I'm so confused...I'm going to develop a split personality cheering for the Eagles while jeering when Vick is leading them.

Ok, so  now it's time to spam my f-list.  I wish all of you a great 2009!  The adults are now in charge of our government again, which makes me very happy.   I know there are some folks on my friends list that are going through rough times, but I sincerely believe that the people who are in charge really care about us.  We are truly coming out of the dark.  If you don't believe me, check out Ornerybastard's great list of things we will be leaving behind:  http://ornerybastard.blogspot.com/2008/11/attorny-general-with-fangs.html. ;

I'm watching the Kennedy Center Honors, and I sincerely was cracking up when I saw our president's reaction to Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend being honored.   He had no freaking clue who they were.  I could just hear him muttering, "why not Hank Williams Jr.?"   And Bettye Lavette?  Wow, watching Pete Townshend break down when he saw her sing Love Reign Over Me.   Is there any better message ever sung in a song?

And the firemen who were at the WTC honoring the Who??   The Who were the first band to rally around the policemen and firemen at the WTC. And THAT is why they are the greatest band ever.

I am a blubbering mess of blubbering tears.  How extraordinary.

My heart is still pounding through my chest... this city is going crazy.  People are swarming the streets, cars are honking, fireworks are going off. It's has been 25 years since Philadelphia has won a championship, and I'm soooo happy!!!  Wow.

Well, I finally took the plunge!  No, I didn't get married (although that would have been a preferable alternative).  I had a hysterectomy.  I'm now home from the hospital, and doing very well.  Especially since I estimate I dropped 20 pounds of useless fibroids.  I've slowly been gaining weight in my stomach area and figured it was just overeating combined with lowered metabolism.  Turns out my uterus was so full of fibroids my doctor equated it to being eight months pregnant.  He also said my uterus was so distorted it was the "strangest" uterus he's ever seen.  Well, at least I'll be well known for something!  They plan on using my uterus as a teaching tool... well, since I never got any use out of it, be my guest!

I've been reading everyone's holiday experiences, good and bad, and just wanted to share as well and wish everyone a great Christmas season and--really important--a great fantastic New Year!  As for me, I got... nothing. Nada.  Zilch.  But I must elaborate.  Our family decided long ago that only the kids (and I have just two nieces) would get gifts.  The nieces got Uggs and Sony PSP respectively from me.   We realized we couldn't give each other the material things we craved (but didn't really need), so we were better off enjoying the kids getting the material things they craved (but DEFINITELY didn't need).   I recommend this approach to everyone.  It makes the holidays about family and EATING!! The important things!!

I would have loved a Wii though.

I decided I needed some time off and am vacationing in Monterey, CA.  I've been chilling and relaxing and.... well, the martinis have been entirely depleted in the Monterey Peninsula.  So I'm sitting watching Buffy Season 7 (finally near the end! I can't believe this show passed me by!).  And I feel this unnatural shaking.  It's not Spike.  I call down to the front desk and I'm told emphatically that it was a truck passing by the hotel.  Five minutes later, the guy at the front desk calls and apologetically informs me that it was an earthquake.  (His mom, sis, entire family informed him of this fact.) Wow. My first quake.  I knew it!! I was sitting here going, IT WAS A QUAKE IT WAS A QUAKE.  Glad to still be here.  Hey, you Californians.  Sheesh.

Totally random fact that just blew my mind--pardon me while I spam my flist....while slumming through IMDB, I discovered that Scrubs crotchety doctor Kelso is, in real life, married to the woman who played Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy's daughter (and is also Kate's niece) in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Did not see that coming!

One of the things I wonder about is why the general public is so interested in the public meltdown of young celebrity women (Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, etc.).  I KNOW there are male celebrities doing the same thing--so why the fixation on the women??  I couldn't care less about Paris, etc., but I think the public fascination of these women reveals a woman-hating culture that likes keep their women in the kitchen. It's all part of the "too fat, too thin, not perfect" slam that all of us has to deal with.  Here's a great article about it (some of you probably saw this posted at ONTD):  http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,2136606,00.html

Bummed

I'm home right now recovering from surgery that proved...less than successful.  I went in yesterday expecting an out patient laparoscopy to remove two pedunculated fibroids and woke up to find that I have four regular (large) fibroids, none of which are removable via laparoscopy.  That means either a hysterectomy or a lifetime of pain.  Needless to say, I am bummed.  Very.

I'm currently watching the Senate debate the Levin-Reed Amendment on C-SPAN 2.  At least I got a good laugh when Trent Lott insisted that Republicans were ready to vote on the amendment, whereupon he was challenged by Sen. Durbin to vote, whereupon Lott objected.   Good times!

It's been four years since the war to "liberate" Iraq began.  I won't go into it, since so many more have spoken about this travesty much more eloquently than me.  I'll just post this:  http://welcome-to-pottersville.blogspot.com/2007/03/teenage-wasteland.html. ; Be warned.  Some of the scenes are really graphic.  Tears will ensue.  And anger.  Much anger.  I will quote this from the blog:  "225 teenagers have been killed in Iraq since 3/19/03 in the time it takes to get a full college education. 214 were American.  Eight of them were teenage girls."

Also, if anyone can help me figure out what the link for this post is so that it continues to appear, even if this blog is updated, I'll be eternally grateful!

On a much, much, much lighter note, is it really bad that I'm watching Dancing with the Stars to see what happens to Heather Mills?  I feel...rotten!
